The celebrations for Kiama Scouts’ 90th anniversary brought together many past members to relive old memories. The search for the oldest members unearthed locals Cynthia Walton and Tony Mitchell, who cut the celebratory cake.
“Kiama Scouts has played an important part in the history of Kiama,” says Group Leader Greg Crofts. “Many past members have stayed in the area, some starting businesses and a few going into politics. So Kiama in some way has grown up over the years around the influence of many past members.”
These include Mayor Mark Honey, a former Cub Scout, and Ann Sudmalis, a Venturer, who both attended the event.
“The fact we are still going strong after 90 years is a testament to all those past members who all played a part in the group’s survival over some difficult years. Particularly during World War II when some of our Leaders were called up and one Scout Leader killed in action overseas,” says Greg Crofts.
