A report is being prepared on a proposal to turn the crater into a BMX/Pump Track for the many locals who enjoy this more adventurous form of cycling.
Minnamurra parent and cycling enthusiast Michael Thompson is championing the idea of a Bike Skills Park, based on his family’s experience using such facilities in other places.
He says most young people ride BMX or mountain bikes, which are designed for different terrains than existing cycleways. “The idea is to provide a safe fun place for children to learn and improve bike riding skills away from roads, car parks and footpaths.”
The quarry is already maintained by Council, and has fencing which can be used to restrict hours.
Mr Thompson says a Bike Skills Park could be fashioned largely from material already on site, keeping costs to a minimum.
He believes the community will be right behind the proposal, helping with its design and building.
